How to make a monthly budget (free, step by step)

24 September 2026 · 5 min read

A simple free method to build a monthly budget that actually works: list income, fix essentials, cap flexible spending and track it weekly.

Step 1: Write down what actually comes in

Use your take-home pay, not your salary before tax. If your income changes every month (freelancers, shop owners), use the lowest month from the last three as your base — anything extra becomes a bonus, not a plan.

Step 2: Cover the essentials first

Rent, utilities, groceries, transport, loan payments and school fees come before anything else. Add them up. If they eat most of your income, that is the number to work on first, not coffee.

Step 3: Pick a split you can keep

A popular starting point is 50/30/20: about half for needs, a third for wants and a fifth for savings or debt. Treat it as a guide — the right split is the one you can repeat every month.

  • Needs: rent, bills, food, transport
  • Wants: eating out, shopping, subscriptions
  • Savings: emergency fund, goals, extra debt payments

Step 4: Set a limit per category and check weekly

A budget fails when you only look at it at month end. Check once a week. In Rupaira you can set a free monthly limit per category and see how much is left at a glance.

Step 5: Adjust, don't abandon

Overspent on groceries? Move money from a want category instead of giving up. After two or three months your limits will match real life.
